Mistakes People Make with DIY Lashes (& How to Fix Them)

DIY lashes have completely changed the game for clients who want beautiful, low-maintenance lashes at home. But the difference between lashes that last one day and lashes that last several days often comes down to technique.

Here are the most common mistakes I see and how to avoid them:

1. Using Too Much Adhesive, More is not better. Overloading the lash with glue can cause clumping, discomfort, and poor retention. A thin, controlled layer is what gives you that seamless, long-lasting hold.

2. Placing Lashes on the Skin Instead of the Lash Line. DIY lashes should sit underneath or right along your natural lash line, not on the skin. Proper placement is what creates that natural extension look and improves retention.

3. Not Prepping the Natural Lashes Oils, makeup residue, or skincare can break down the adhesive quickly. Clean, dry lashes are key before application.

4. Skipping the Seal StepSealing is what locks everything in. It removes any tackiness and helps extend the wear. Skipping this step is one of the biggest reasons lashes don’t last.

5. Touching or Adjusting Too Much Constantly touching the lashes right after application can weaken the bond before it fully sets. Once they’re placed, let them settle.

6. Expecting Strip Lash Results DIY lashes are different, they’re meant to mimic extensions, not strips. When applied correctly, the result is lighter, more natural, and longer-lasting.

The biggest shift? DIY lashes are not just about applying lashes, they’re about applying them correctly. Once the technique is right, the results speak for themselves.
